Investigating water

This section demonstrates the process for students to learn about, explore and audit water in the school environment, encouraging students to investigate, plan and take action.

1. Learn about the relationship between water and climate change

Use an inquiry approach to look at water as a theme within sustainability, and how water relates to the wider issue of climate change.

  • Sources of water
  • Uses and management of water
  • Water quality and its impacts
  • Water in South Australia
  • How does water relate to climate change?
  • How can water conservation efforts have an impact on long term water accessibility?

2. Explore and learn about water use at your site and local community

Use an inquiry approach to look into how your community uses water.

  • Daily water uses.
  • Where does your water come from?
  • How does your community use water sustainably?
  • How does the quality and amount of water impact on your local environment?

3. Use environmental assessment tools to document how water is captured and used at your school

A water audit will identify water storage and usage, and human impacts on the environment. Students can use the data to investigate issues, compare consumption patterns and plan for more sustainable living in the school and local community.

4. Plan next steps using the Site Environment Management Plan (SEMP)

  • Use the SEMP to document auditing results and plan priority actions and next steps
  • Read what others have done for water inspired ideas and learning experiences.

5. Take action

Use your SEMP action plan to put water efficient initiatives into practice. Develop partnerships to get the whole site community on board.

6. Reflect, celebrate and review

Acknowledge your milestones in achieving targets that demonstrate more sustainable water use.

  • Get together and think about the actions you have taken to conserve water
  • Monitor and compare water use
  • Document actions and goals achieved in your SEMP
  • Communicate and celebrate your achievements
  • Think about how these actions can be established for long term environmental benefits
  • What are your next steps?
