Fleurieu Peninsula Seeds for Snapper 2022 - Opening Day

12 November 2022 until 12 July 2022

Ever wondered if we can revegetate the ocean? Yes we can, and we want you to be part of it!

This summer Seeds for Snapper is happening along the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula coast from December 2022 - January 2023. It’s an exciting community seagrass restoration project delivered by OzFish Unlimited with support from the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board and local councils.

This community driven project relies heavily on recreational anglers and community members who help collect, process and deploy seagrass seedlings into the ocean. You can watch a short video on the metropolitan coast project here.

As well as providing an important habitat for a range of marine species and nursery ground for snapper, calamari, whiting and blue swimmer crabs, seagrasses also help to stabilise soil and sediment on the ocean floor, helping to protect Australia’s shorelines from erosion and storms.

They also store carbon and nutrients, which helps to improve water quality and clarity – a hectare of seagrass stores 35 times more carbon than a hectare of rainforest.

OzFish, Australia’s only fishing conservation charity has been successfully delivering the Seeds for Snapper restoration program in South Australia since 2020. This summer, methods used along Adelaide’s metropolitan coastline will be trialled at sites around the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula.

We are hosting an information session to find out more about the project, how you can get involved and help spread the word.
