Job description:

The Kangaroo Island Landscape Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the successful development and implementation of a region-specific environmental education program in partnership with the local school Kangaroo Island Community Education (KICE). The position will coordinate Kangaroo Island (KI) Landscape Board involvement with the education sector and will work towards student education and understanding of environmental values and threats.

Key outcomes include:
  • Develop, implement, monitor and review a free environmental education program embedded in the Australian (R-10) and SA (11-12) curriculum in partnership with KICE.
  • Act as a conduit, connecting KICE teachers with KI Landscape Board staff to effectively plan for and deliver the KI environmental education program.
  • Increase awareness of natural resource management education through the development of media, communication materials and resources that are engaging and meet the interests of school communities and stakeholders.
  • Effectively coordinate and deliver learning modules on for example threatened species, sustainable agriculture, coast and marine and invasive species, for teachers to use with support from specialist KI Landscape Board staff through, classroom education sessions, and whole of school approaches to environmental education.
  • Support KICE students to attend the Youth Environment Council of South Australia and/or participate in environmental and sustainable agriculture youth leadership programs.
  • Compile educational kits with resources and a variety of interactive activities for teachers to borrow and incorporate in their learning schedules.

Deliver landscape education projects, events and activities on time, to budget and to a high quality.

Contribute to a safe workplace by accepting responsibility for own and others’ safety, identifying and reporting hazards, and participating in consultation about health and safety matters.

Selection criteria:

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to manage conflict to maintain positive relationships and achieve win-win outcomes.
  • Ability to write fluently and provide thoroughly researched documents that convey information in a way that the reader will easily understand.
  • Ability to set goals and manage own work to achieve expected outcomes for project and work plans.
  • Proven ability to work with groups providing facilitation skills and experience in delivering education based programs.
  • Demonstrates a fundamental and current understanding of relevant curriculum within the South Australian Primary and Secondary Schools education systems.
  • Location: Kingscote, Kangaroo Island
  • Job status: Long Term Contract
  • Hours of work: Part time (18.75 hours/week) – Flexible work arrangements may be negotiated
