Managing water

The health of the Kangaroo Island environment and the viability of its economy rely heavily on clean and adequate supplies of water. The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board is responsible for developing and administering Water Affecting Control Policies under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019 (the Act). To do so the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board works closely with all KI stakeholders, including community, agencies and local government, to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities with respect to water affecting activities under the Act.

To assist with this an extensive array of baseline data sets including physical, chemical and biological parameters for KI watercourses, have been established. The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board continues to monitor a suite of water quality attributes within the Cygnet River, and other river systems, and has assisted with the development of a hydrogeological model for the Cygnet River catchment to assess the implications of different water management scenarios. Land managers are also supported to improve water quality.
