A prescribed burn is planned at Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area in Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island for today, Tuesday 18th April 2017, weather conditions permitting.
- The prescribed burn will start around midday and should be complete by 10pm tonight.
- It will affect about 600ha in the north eastern block of the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Area, bounded by the West End Highway to the west, Shackle Road to the east and the Playford Highway to the north.
- No road or track closures are expected.
- It is possible that there will be multiple smoke plumes visible from this burn within the block.
The burn will be carried out by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR). The crew will remain on site until it is safe to leave.
The primary objective of this burn is to assist in redeveloping a mosaic of differing vegetation within the reserve to support habitat diversity, and mitigate the risk of the whole block burning in a single fire event.
Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
