The Mallee Woodlands includes the southern end of the RAMSAR-listed Coorong National Park, with its internationally recognised wetland values. Many hundreds of aquatic, bird and animal species live here and migratory shorebirds flock here in their thousands from as far away as Alaska and Siberia.
Agriculture is the biggest employer, primarily in sheep and cattle grazing, small seeds production and cropping. The townships in the area, including Keith, Tintinara and Salt Creek, support retail trade, health care, manufacturing and education.
The Potaruwutj, Tangenekald and Ngarrendjeri people have managed these landscapes for thousands of years, and they continue to have a cultural connection to the land.
