Natural Resources Management - a real career option

News article |

Three students recently joined staff from the Natural Resources South East (NRSE) team for an educational work experience program across the Limestone Coast.

NRSE Environmental Education Coordinator Natasha Dawson said work experience was a great opportunity for school students to explore their career options.

“This hands on program gave students a unique opportunity to trial activities to manage natural environments in our region,” Ms Dawson said.

“The program explored one of the South East NRM Board’s four core priorities each day.

“It also looked at aspects of maintaining water quality and availability, as well as soil health, minimising the impact of pest plants and animals and conserving native vegetation.”

Students toured the district from the Blue Lake to Piccaninnie Ponds and learned about the importance and use of water in the landscape.

“They also had an opportunity to talk with a landholder about adaptive farm management techniques, climate change and maintaining biodiversity on farms,” Ms Dawson said.

“They removed boneseed and learned about the impact of invasive pest plants and animals on agriculture and the environment, and assisted with some revegetation in the Coorong.”

Year 10 student Dakota said she loved the experience and wished she could do it again.

“I definitely enjoyed planting all the trees up at Salt Creek,” Dakota said.

“I felt like I was making a difference and it was rewarding to see the end result.”

Over the week the students liaised with NRM professionals from across our organisation to see the variety of career pathways open to them in the field of natural resources management.

Applications to join this work experience program in 2020 will open in Term 1 next year, please contact NRSE to leave your email address to be the first to know when applications open.
