Coomandook Sandy Rise – Loamy Sand over Clayed Sand

This site closely relates to a G3 soil type – thick sand over clay. These soil types have a thick sand in the surface with a bleached A2 layer at approximately 15-45cm. The sub surface consists of brown or yellow clay.

Soils pH is slightly alkaline at the surface, and alkaline at depth. Rooting depth is 80cm however there are few roots below 45cm. The clayey subsoil provides a minor limitation to root growth. Poor nutrient holding capacity and availability throughout the profile will limit root growth.

Further information on G3 soils can be found on page 194 of The Soils of Southern South Australia, Part 1 or Part 2.

Detailed representative soil profile data is available for more than 1100 locations around South Australia and can be accessed through Nature Maps, with a handy guide for using data sheets also available. A localised soil characterisation site data sheet provides indicative chemical analysis of a G3 soil type.
