Lameroo Sandy Rise – Sand over Sandy Loam

This site closely relates to an H3 soil type – deep bleached siliceous sand. H3 soil types have a thick sand in the surface with a bleached A2 layer at approximately 20-60cm. The sub surface comes calcareous and slightly more clayey with depth.

The soil pH is slightly acidic at the surface and becomes slightly alkaline with depth. Rooting depth is approximately 60cm with no physical barriers to root growth. The main limitation is low nutrient retention capacity and availability for plant growth.

Further information on H3 soils can be found on page 208 of The Soils of Southern South Australia, Part 1 or Part 2.

Detailed representative soil profile data is available for more than 1100 locations around South Australia and can be accessed through Nature Maps, with a handy guide for using data sheets also available. A localised soil characterisation site data sheet provides indicative chemical analysis of a H3 soil type.
