Lowaldie Flat – Loamy Clay over Clay
This site closely relates to a D2 soil type – sandy loam over red clay. This soil type has a soft sandy loam surface layer, over red well-structured clay. The subsurface becomes calcareous with depth.
The soil pH is slightly acidic at the surface and becomes ore alkaline with depth. Rooting depth is approximately 80cm. The hardness of the sandy substrate prevents root penetration. The subsoils low nutrient status limits root proliferation.
Further information on D2 soils can be found on page 156 of The Soils of Southern South Australia, Part 1 or Part 2.
Detailed representative soil profile data is available for more than 1100 locations around South Australia and can be accessed through Nature Maps, with a handy guide for using data sheets also available. A localised soil characterisation site data sheet provides indicative chemical analysis of a D2 soil type.
