Neales Flat – Red Brown Clay Light Clay over Orange Brown Light Clay
This site closely relates to a D2 soil type – loam over red clay. These soil types have hard setting loam to clay loam abruptly overlying strongly structured red clay, calcareous with depth, grading to unconsolidated sediments.
Soils pH is neutral at the surface and alkaline with depth. Rooting depth is to 85cm, with fewer roots below 45cm. The coarsely structured clayey subsoil presents a slight limitation, due to its effect on root densities, but it is not dispersive, so adverse impacts should be minimal. The soil surface can be hard setting and seal reducing seedling emergence in some seasons.
Further information on D2 soils can be found on page 156 of The Soils of Southern South Australia, Part 1 or Part 2.
Detailed representative soil profile data is available for more than 1100 locations around South Australia and can be accessed through Nature Maps, with a handy guide for using data sheets also available. A localised soil characterisation site data sheet provides indicative chemical analysis of a D2 soil type.
