Waikerie Flat – Loam over Light Clay/Calcrete (Maggea)

This site closely relates to a B3 soil type – shallow sandy loam over calcrete. This soil type has a red non-calcareous sandy loam with variable rubble over calcrete at shallow depth.

The soil pH is alkaline throughout the profile. Rooting depth is approximately 20cm. Calcrete restricts root growth. pH below calcrete layer is very high. Seedling emergence can be limited due to stoniness.

Further information on B3 soils can be found on page 122 of The Soils of Southern South Australia, Part 1 or Part 2.

Detailed representative soil profile data is available for more than 1100 locations around South Australia and can be accessed through Nature Maps, with a handy guide for using data sheets also available. A localised soil characterisation site data sheet provides indicative chemical analysis of a B3 soil type.
