Waikerie Midslope – Loamy Sand over Loamy Clay (Lowbank)

This site closely relates to an A4 soil type – calcareous sandy loam. This soil type has calcareous sandy loam grading to a very highly calcareous sandy clay loam with abundant rubble, decreasing with depth.

The soil pH is alkaline at the surface and strongly alkaline with depth. Rooting depth is approximately 65cm, but very few roots extend below 50cm. Calcrete provides a physical barrier to rooting depth. High pH and sodicity from 20cm and salinity from 50 cm can restrict root growth.

Further information on A4 soils can be found on page 104 of The Soils of Southern South Australia, Part 1 or Part 2.

Detailed representative soil profile data is available for more than 1100 locations around South Australia and can be accessed through Nature Maps, with a handy guide for using data sheets also available. A localised soil characterisation site data sheet provides indicative chemical analysis of an A4 soil type.
