Carbon farming webinars unpack shelterbelts, ACCUs and opportunities for SA producers
South Australian producers, conservationists and land managers wanting to better understand carbon farming are invited to join two free webinars exploring practical revegetation, shelterbelts, carbon markets and Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) opportunities.
Hosted by Landscape SA and Greening Australia, the webinars will focus on planting shelterbelts and habitat that deliver on-ground benefits and assessing real world carbon farming opportunities for SA producers.
The first webinar, Revegetation that works: Practical design, benefits, and SA case studies, will be held on Monday 25 May 2026, from 1 pm to 2 pm.
The session will take a practical look at how well-designed revegetation can deliver benefits for stock, biodiversity, farm productivity and carbon outcomes. It will explore how shelterbelts can provide shade and protection for livestock, reduce wind exposure, support erosion control, create habitat and improve biodiversity, while also storing carbon in vegetation.
Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Carbon Outreach Officer Alex Comino said the webinar would be useful for landholders wanting to design plantings that deliver real results.
“Revegetation is not just about planting trees — it’s about planning and planting the right species, in the right place, for the right purpose,” Ms Comino said.
“Good shelterbelt and habitat design can support livestock welfare, improve landscape function, protect soils, create wildlife habitat and contribute to carbon and biodiversity outcomes.
“This webinar is designed to give landholders practical ideas they can apply on their own properties, whether they are starting small or planning a larger project.”
The session will feature Zoe Birnie and Mick Durant from Greening Australia.
Ms Birnie is a biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration specialist with a focus on maximising environmental, social and economic impact through restoration activities. She is also an Accredited Expert – Accounting for Nature in vegetation and fauna.
Mr Durant is a field ecologist and native vegetation management practitioner with more than 25 years’ experience in conservation, restoration and working with landholders to design, cost and implement revegetation projects for carbon and biodiversity outcomes.
The second webinar, Carbon markets and ACCU opportunities for SA producers, will be held on Thursday 28 May 2026, from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm.
The session will answer the question: carbon markets, ACCUs and carbon farming — what do they actually mean, and where are the opportunities for SA producers?
It will provide a practical overview of the ACCU scheme, current ACCU methods, opportunities relevant to South Australian producers, key risks and practical considerations, and how to decide whether a carbon project is suitable for a farming business.
The webinar will feature Jen Barwick, an experienced policy developer and consultant working across environmental markets and nature-based climate solutions, and James McGregor, a leader in nature-based solutions and large-scale ecological restoration with Greening Australia’s company Canopy.
The session combines Jen’s policy and markets perspective with James’ on-the-ground project development experience, and will provide attendees with a better understanding of both the strategic context and the practical realities of engaging with carbon projects.
Ms Comino said the two webinars were designed to give producers practical information they could use when considering carbon farming opportunities.
“Carbon farming can sound complicated, but these sessions are about making the information clear, practical and relevant to South Australian landholders,” she said.
“Whether producers are interested in shelterbelts, biodiversity plantings, ACCUs or broader carbon market opportunities, these webinars will help them understand the options, risks and next steps.”
