Weather station platform strengthens SA’s climate‑smart decision making

Land managers and primary producers in South Australia now have improved access to local, real‑time climate information following a major upgrade to the shared weather station network website.

The upgraded platform brings together free and reliable data from 39 automated weather stations managed by five regional landscape boards — Murraylands and Riverland, Limestone Coast, Hills and Fleurieu and Northern and Yorke — together with partner organisation Langhorne Creek Grape & Wine.

The more intuitive, user-friendly system includes an interactive map and grouped regional sub‑networks making it easier to quickly view data and daily trends relevant to a specific location.

Data includes rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, soil temperature, and key calculated indicators such as Delta‑T, which are critical inputs for decisions about spraying, irrigation scheduling, seeding and harvest timing.

The weather station network was set up in 2004 to give landholders access to location-specific climate data in areas where official Bureau of Meteorology weather stations did not provide coverage.

Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator Jeremy Nelson said the upgraded website supported informed decision-making, particularly in the context of increasing climate variability.

“The information from the network is very valuable in assisting landholders to interpret the intensity and scale of differing climatic factors and how they can adapt their practices to compensate or adjust around climate intensity,” he said.

The website upgrade also improves consistency and accessibility across regions, ensuring land managers, advisors and agencies can work from the same trusted data source, whether they are managing agricultural production, water resources, biosecurity risks or landscape resilience.

In addition to the core partner network, the platform also displays data from SAFECOM, Barossa Improved Grazing Group, and Mid North and the Riverland and Mallee Mesonet Weather Station networks.
