What is your favourite native animal

We have so many amazing and very cute native animals in our area.

This week was World Wildlife Day, and we were talking about some of the incredible species across the Northern and Yorke region.

We’d love to see your favourite…

Whether it’s a sleepy koala, a colourful bird in your backyard, a scurrying lizard or a much loved echidna, we want to see it!

Recently we did a story on a cute native species which was locally extinct, but is now making a comeback thanks to the Marna Bangarra rewilding project. They are called brush-tailed bettongs (known as yalgiri to the local Narungga people) on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula.

We’ll be collecting community favourites for two weeks before opening up a public vote to find South Australia’s most-loved native animal of 2026.

🗓️ TIMELINE

1 April: Launch, letting people know how to post photos and list the names of their favourite native animals
30 April: We will compile a shortlist of native animals nominated by community
1 May: We will put a poll on our socials and, we will encourage the community to vote for their favourite
30 May: Winner announced
