Statement of commitment

As the Alinytjara Wiluṟara Landscape Board, we commit to fostering meaningful and respectful partnerships with Aṉangu communities. We recognise the invaluable knowledge and cultural heritage that Aṉangu communities contribute to the stewardship and sustainable management of natural resources in the Alinytjara Wiluṟara region. Our approach is guided by the principles of mutual respect, equity, and shared responsibility.

1. Respect and acknowledge traditional knowledge
   • We respect the rights, cultural practices, and traditional knowledge of Aṉangu peoples in Alinytjara Wiluṟara region.
   • We recognise the importance of Aboriginal leadership in natural resource management.
2. Partnership and collaboration
   • We are committed to engaging in open, honest, and ongoing dialogue with Aṉangu communities.
   • Our consultations will be done in a culturally appropriate manner, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.
3. Cultural sensitivity, awareness and ownership
   • We will promote cultural awareness and sensitivity within our organisation.
   • We will provide training and resources to our staff to understand and respect Aboriginal cultures.
   • We will advocate for other landscape boards and project partners to be well informed and culturally aware.
   • We acknowledge and respect cultural intellectual property, used with free and prior consent, with appropriate compensation for its use.
4. Promote capacity building and empowerment
   • We will work collaboratively with Aṉangu communities to build capacity and empower local leadership in natural resource management through access to resources, opportunities, and support for their initiatives.
   • We aim to support community-led initiatives and foster opportunities for meaningful involvement.
5. Foster long-term relationships
   • We are committed to building long-term, sustainable relationships based on trust and mutual respect.
   • Our engagement with Aṉangu communities will be ongoing and evolving, adapting to changing needs and priorities.
   • We will strive to ensure that Aṉangu communities have equitable access to resources, opportunities, and benefits from natural resource management initiatives.
6. Sustainable management and stewardship
   • We will actively seek and incorporate Traditional Ecological Knowledge and cultural perspectives into our decision-making processes.
   • We will work towards sustainable and respectful use of natural resources, ensuring the preservation of cultural sites and environmental landscapes.
7. Accountability and transparency
   • We will maintain transparency in our actions and decisions, ensuring accountability to our Aṉangu community partners.
   • We will regularly review and report on our progress in fulfilling these commitments and seek feedback.
