New Board members

The Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board has welcomed two new Board members.

Following the resignation of member Helen Lamont earlier this year and an ongoing vacant position, an application process was open in May with two new members now appointed by the Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, Susan Close.

The new members are Sandra Walsh from Whyalla and Sonya Coleman from Streaky Bay, with the pair attending their first Board meeting last week in Wudinna.

Sonya brings to the Board her passion about the environment in which she lives, especially in regards to the control of introduced weeds and feral animals.

“I am most particularly passionate about invasive plant pests and feral animals, and the issues they present to our native environment,” Ms Coleman says.

“Unwittingly people can contribute to their increase or ongoing survival just through insufficient information or lack of knowledge.

“I doubt that I’ll see the eradication of weeds or feral animals in my lifetime, but if through my involvement with the EP Landscape Board I can assist in making a small dent in this, I would find that very rewarding.”

Sandra, who is rural health researcher with the University of South Australia, brings to the Board an interest in the natural environment and the balance of conservation with industry and tourism.

“I am really looking forward to being a part of the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board, gaining a better understanding of the important issues around the EP, and supporting the continued success of the Board,” Ms Walsh says.

“The Eyre Peninsula is a precious resource for how we live, work and play. I am excited to join the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board and play a role in shaping the EP for future generations.”

Board Chair Peter Treloar has welcomed the appointments.

“The Board greatly values people who care about managing our local environment, and we look forward to working with Sandra and Sonya on natural resource priorities for our region,” Mr Treloar says.

“This will be particularly important as we work towards a new five-year regional landscape plan for Eyre Peninsula next year, for implementation from mid 2026.

“These plans aim to ensure that there is a balance between the needs of regional communities and the sustainable management of the environment.”

Last week’s Board meeting was also the last for Alan Tingay from Coffin Bay, who has chosen not to re-nominate following his appointment period coming to an end.

Mr Treloar extends his thanks to Alan and his contribution to the Board since February 2023.

The Board membership is now:

  • Peter Treloar from Edillilie as Chair
  • Nikki Becker from Elliston
  • Sonya Coleman from Streaky Bay
  • Cecelia Cox from Ceduna
  • Mark Dennis from Koppio
  • Kate McShane from Port Lincoln
  • Steven Milner from Denial Bay
  • Sandra Walsh from Whyalla
