Grants open for local environmental projects

The Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board’s annual Grassroots Grants program is now open with grants up to $15,000 available for community natural resource management projects.

The grants are to support local projects or events that focus on at least one of the EP Landscape Board’s regional priorities of water, primary production, pest plants and animals, land and coastal biodiversity and collaboration and partnerships.

EP Landscape Board Chair Peter Treloar encourages community groups, schools, councils and other not-for-profit organisations, to get involved in local landscape management projects.

“For Eyre Peninsula’s landscapes to be managed sustainably, it needs to be a collaborative effort,” Mr Treloar says.

“Our Grassroots Grants program is an opportunity for the community to take action and contribute to local on-ground activities or information sharing.

“We’ve seen diverse projects funded through these grants in past years and look forward to seeing what can happen in the next year thanks to this funding.”

Last year District Council of Streaky Bay was among the 14 grant recipients, focusing on gazania control at Perlubie and Streaky Bay.

The Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board worked with community members on pulling up gazania plants at Perlubie.

Penny Williams, General Manager, Prosperity from District Council of Streaky Bay says the spread of gazania has significantly changed the native landscape of these coastal areas so it’s been a priority to get on top of this weed.

“It’s been great to see the community get involved with weed removal sessions at Perlubie that have really made a difference,” says Penny.

‘The Project has also focused on collaborating with Crown Lands to protect areas of coastal biodiversity and halt the spread.

“We’ve also been working with the EP Landscape Board on spreading more awareness amongst the community about this weed and why it’s important for landholders to control any patches on their land, particularly while Council are focusing on open space and road reserve areas.

“It’s definitely beginning to make a difference around our region.”

Renee Hunt, General Manager, Infrastructure with District Council of Streaky Bay - whose team was instrumental in partnering on this project - agreed that control measures are costly and without the grant funding, it would reduce annual impacts that control measures can have.

Renee and Penny both believe that the Grassroots Grant funding provides opportunities for strong collaboration between all stakeholders that can provide tangible environmental outcomes.

Funding for the 2026-27 Grassroots Grants totals $127,000. Grants available are:

  • Small grants, up to $5,000
  • Large grants, up to $15,000

The grants are for projects that will be complete by mid June 2027.

The Grassroots Grants program is funded through the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board levy.

This year’s Grassroots Grants applications are open until Monday, May 18, 2026. For further information including application FAQs, guidelines and form, see the EP Landscape Board’s grant page.
