Fox bait distribution days
Landholders on southern Eyre Peninsula are invited to attend group fox baiting days to help them plan their fox control programs.
Feb 2016
Landholders on southern Eyre Peninsula will be able to pick up their fox baits and discuss their fox control programs at up-coming events starting Thursday, 9 March at the LEADA Expo at Ungarra.
Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Officer Seb Drewer said based on last year’s feedback from landholders it was convenient for some landholders to collect the baits from events they we already attending.
Fox baits will also be available to landholders from around the Peninsula at the SheepConnect Technology Expo held at Wudinna on the 10 March.
A reduced number of specific bait distribution days will still be offered on Lower Eyre Peninsula as it is important for neighbouring properties to bait at the same time when possible.
“Free fox baits will be available to eligible landholders, and NREP staff will be on hand to discuss property baiting programs,” Mr Drewer said.
“Research by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA indicates that sheep producers who work with their neighbours to bait at the same time in a well-coordinated program can increase their lambing percentages by up to 20 per cent.
“It also showed that the greatest increases in lambing result from baiting strategically twice a year: in autumn before winter lambing and during the spring fox breeding season.
“Other land managers bait as a good neighbour gesture or to protect wildlife on their properties.”
Foxes are estimated to cost Australia’s environment and economy about $230 million a year.
In 2015, Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula distributed more than 20,000 fox baits to landholders across the region.
Limited numbers of dried kangaroo meat baits will be available at the group baiting days depending on landholders’ previous usage. Bring along a bucket with a sealable lid or buy a bucket from NREP when you collect your baits.
Commercially-produced baits such as Foxoff are also available from all NREP offices. Commercial baits can be stored for months and cost $30 for a bucket of 20.
