Latest in sheep technology increases returns
Sheep producers on the Eyre Peninsula can see the latest technology and equipment available for livestock enterprises in the one venue, at the SheepConnect SA Sheep Technology Day at Wudinna this month.
Sustainable Agriculture Officer Mary Crawford said the day, supported by Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula, will feature demonstrations of the latest innovations in sheep management.
“This important day will showcase wool testing, pregnancy and body condition scanners auto drafters and weighers, as well as sheep handlers, auto jetters, electronic identification systems, water monitoring systems and solar pumps,” Ms Crawford said.
“These technologies will help to identify the most and least productive animals within a flock, whilst also saving time and labour costs.
“They allow sheep producers to identify and exploit the natural variation that exists within a flock and create an opportunity to significantly improved profitability.”
The day will include a speaker’s session with ‘Mind Your Business’ weekly feature author, Ken Solly, from Solly Business Services, as well as working demonstrations and static displays from twenty companies.
Ms Crawford said Ken will discuss how to make the right decisions when investing in the sheep enterprise.
“Ken is well respected in the sheep industry, and is recognised across Australia as a leading educator of farmers,” Mary said.
“His expertise is particularly relevant in the fields of cost of production, managing people, business planning, business analysis and benchmarking. Ken’s down to earth approach to consulting places emphasis on empowering sheep producers to improve their skills, businesses and lifestyle.”
Ms Crawford said other speakers include Director of Eubindal Pty Ltd, John Roberts, who discusses wool selling into the future, with the Final Report from the Wool Selling Systems Review (WSSR) released on the 1st February this year.
“John will outline the significant findings and recommendations from the Wool Selling Systems Review, including cost saving opportunities, different approach for sale by description and bringing the wool selling system into the digital age,” said Mary.
Hamish Dickson from AgriPartner Consulting, will also present the latest advances in sheep nutrition in the day’s morning sessions.
“Hamish has over 15 years’ experience in the agricultural industry, working with organisations and clients across Australia and internationally,” Ms Crawford said.
“He not only has a strong theoretical knowledge, he combines this with a practical approach.
"With specialist knowledge of ruminant production systems, Hamish is regularly called on to assist with advice, training and research in sheep and cattle nutrition, management and financial analysis.”
