Fountain grass find

Our western district team recently discovered a new fountain grass infestation near Streaky Bay.

One of our landscape officers surveying the newly found fountain grass infestation.

The team spotted a large fountain grass plant as they were driving along Flinders Highway near Streaky Bay.

A full survey of the roadside revealed around 10 fountain grass plants, all within approximately 10 metres of each other on the highway embankment. This is a new infestation and has likely emerged rapidly following recent rainfall.

Fountain grass is generally a summer weed – and after rain across the region – it’s a prime time for these plants to sprout. Fountain grass can survive 7 years in the soil so follow up at previously infested sites is essential. It is best controlled by herbicide when actively growing (green).

If you think you have fountain grass on your property, see our fact sheet or contact your nearest landscape officer.

This follows buffel grass being discovered in the Arno Bay township last month. Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) is our highest priority weed for control and eradication across Eyre Peninsula and flowering of this weed also occurs after rain during summer (or warmer autumn weather). Find out more.
