Bird flu update

News article |

Spring brings the migration of many species of shorebirds to Eyre Peninsula. It is possible that bird flu could arrive with those birds.

Of concern this year is the H5N1 strain of bird flu which has the potential to pass to mammals and even humans through contact. H5 has not yet been detected in Australia.

People are asked to do the following if they see unusual signs of disease in birds or wildlife, or mass bird deaths.

1. AVOID contact with sick or dead wildlife including keeping pets away from them. Do not pick up the birds and do not bring them into one of our offices.

2. RECORD as much information as possible, including time, date, location, number of animals and a photo or footage if possible, of the scene and the animal/s.

3. REPORT any suspected cases to your local vet or the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888
