Source your firewood sustainably

During autumn many prepare for the cold, wet and windy days ahead by collecting wood for their winter fires. Wood removed from roadsides and bush land has the potential to spread diseases that affect plant life and have a negative impact on wildlife including birds, lizards and small mammals. Natural Resources, Eyre Peninsula is urging the community to carefully consider the source of their firewood to minimise negative impacts on the environment.

Soil acidity issues on Eyre Peninsula

Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula and Primary Industries and Regions SA are working together on the problem of soil acidity in the lower Eyre Peninsula, where the ironstone and sandy soils are inherently prone to acidification. Primary Industries and Regions SA Soil and Land Management Consultant Brett Masters said acidification was a major issue for lower Eyre Peninsula farming regions with about 170,000ha of the region’s ironstone and sandy soils prone to the problem.

Whyalla dolphins population: human-interaction managed sustainably.

DEWNR have discussed with Whyalla Council the welfare of the dolphins and willingness to consider opportunities that would be in the best interests of these animals, including options for Council to manage unregulated feeding while at the same time providing benefit to the local community.

An integrated and on-going rabbit control program to maintain low rabbit abundance at Peake Point on lower Eyre Peninsula has paid dividends and enabled Jumping jack wattle (Acacia enterocarpa), a nationally threatened wattle species, to regenerate in its natural environment.
