Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Plan released

The Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board is proud to release the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Plan 2021-26. It was formally launched by The Honourable David Speirs MP, Minister for Environment and Water, on Wednesday 29 September, with board members and stakeholders in attendance at Myponga.

The plan will guide the landscape stewardship and restoration of the region over the next 5 years, setting strategies for addressing some of the region’s biggest challenges and opportunities.

Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board Chair David Greenhough said the plan was developed with significant input from the community.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank the community members, organisations and stakeholders that contributed ideas during consultation. We have worked hard to integrate your passion, aspirations and ideas into the plan. It has been great to have Minister Speirs here today to launch the plan and we are looking forward to working with the community and partner organisations on its delivery.”

In launching the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Plan, Minister Speirs praised the board for its efforts in developing the Landscape Plan for the region.

“Our historic Landscape SA reform is putting communities back at the heart of natural resources management and these Landscape Plans are a key part of this,” Minister Speirs said.

“I look forward to seeing Landscape Boards across the state deliver our back-to-basics approach in partnership with the wider community.”

The Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Plan sets out five priorities as high level ambitions for the region:

• Land – Regenerating biodiverse and highly productive landscapes
• Water – Managing water resources sustainably
• Nature – Conserving natural places, ecosystems and wildlife
• Climate – Becoming a carbon neutral and climate resilient region
• Community – Everyone caring for our landscapes.

“These priorities and the focus areas in the plan will guide and coordinate the contributions of people and organisations across the region. They reflect the key needs and values of the region, and address our collective challenges.” said Mr Greenhough.

“We heard from the community that they wanted the plan to be bold and address the big issues – including biodiversity loss and climate change. The way we respond to these challenges will influence the health of the region. We are keen to build partnerships to tackle these challenges.”

“We encourage everyone to read the plan. It is going to take all of us working together to achieve the plan’s vision, for a region inspired to protect its uniquely biodiverse and productive landscapes into the future.”

The board hopes that the region will be an international exemplar, recognised for its resilient and beautiful landscapes, cared for through whole-of-community stewardship.
