Free sessions to help tackle rabbits and protect wildlife

Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu will be running free Rabbit Information Sessions in November and December to help landholders learn more about rabbit management strategies.

Rabbits continue to be a serious pest in our region, with many people reporting that rabbits have been present for the past few months. This is most likely due to several years of relatively mild summers and reduced impact from Myxomatosis and Calicivirus.

Rabbits significantly impact gardens and prevent regeneration of native plants. In South Australia it has been shown that just one rabbit can destroy every regenerating sheoak across an entire 2 hectares of land. Furthermore, rabbits in our region are rife with fleas which are passed onto our pets. In South Australia, property owners have a legal responsibility to control rabbits on their land.

Thankfully there are well-researched, effective safe ways to manage rabbits. Simple solutions like fencing vegetable gardens and clearing hiding spots can make a big difference. Additionally, destroying warrens during the summer months is crucial, as young rabbits are particularly sensitive to heat.

The upcoming Rabbit Information Sessions, presented by Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu, will provide practical strategies to minimise rabbit impacts, ensuring a healthier environment for gardens, native vegetation, pets and wildlife. All suitable control options, including baiting, will be covered to help with well-informed decision-making and safe handling.

Following these information sessions, Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu will be holding Bait Distribution Days in December and into 2025, where rabbit control bait and Calicivirus will be available.

These Bait Distribution Days will ensure rabbits are baited across multiple properties at the same time. This approach enables more effective rabbit control and better environmental outcomes. Bookings for the bait distribution days will open later in November.

Please note that Pindone-treated carrots will no longer be sold from the Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu office location.

Bookings for the Rabbit Information Sessions can be made here.
