Community invited to take a closer look at American River weeds
American River residents and other interested community members are invited to join a guided End of Winter Weed Walk on Sunday 13 September to learn how to identify local weeds and discuss practical management options.
The community event is hosted by the American River Progress Association, with support from the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board. Participants will meet at the American River Hall at 11 am before joining Board Animal and Plant Control Officers Jason Walter and Steve Walsh for an approximately one-hour loop along Ryberg Road and Scenic Drive.
Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Animal and Plant Control Officer Jason Walter said Effective weed control starts with knowing what to look for and acting early. This walk gives people a practical opportunity to see local weeds where they are growing, ask questions and build the confidence to manage them."
"We will look closely at weeds along the route, talk through identification and practical control options, and answer questions about weeds people are seeing around American River,” he said.
Copies of the Weeds of Kangaroo Island guide will be available for participants. The guide is designed to help people identify priority weeds and understand the control methods available.
The route is mostly flat and follows grass and bitumen surfaces, with one downhill section. People who prefer not to complete the walk are welcome to join the opening discussion and the post-walk debrief and question-and-answer session at the Hall paddock.
