Carbon Farming Outreach Program
A carbon-neutral farm reaps productivity, environmental co-benefits, and potentially increased profit as markets, banks and insurance companies increasingly seek to achieve their carbon emissions commitments. With so much information available in a rapidly evolving space, knowing what is right for your farm can be difficult to navigate.
Support and advice
The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board is here to support you as a carbon smart land manager. Our team has local knowledge and expertise and can provide free, independent advice to rural land managers on:
- Understanding emissions reduction and carbon sequestration
- How to calculate on-farm emissions
- Understanding new reporting requirements
- Connecting with like-minded land managers
- Participating in carbon markets
Carbon farming workshops
Are you curious about how carbon farming can revolutionise your agricultural practices and benefit your business?
Come along for a free workshop to unlock the potential of carbon farming. We’ll provide the latest local information on this new buzz term and explain emissions reduction.
What we’ll cover:
- What is carbon farming? Understand the concept and its applications.
- Benefits for on-farm productivity: Explore how carbon farming can enhance your farm’s efficiency and output.
- Carbon footprint: Learn what it is and why reducing it is critical.
- Calculating emissions intensity: Get practical insights on measuring and managing your emissions.
- Generating carbon credits: Can you earn credits? What to consider.
Next round of carbon farming workshops:
Soil Carbon Q & A with Dr Amanda Schapel.
Date: 23 September 2025
Time: 3pm to 5pm (includes free afternoon tea)
Location: KILB Office Boardroom
Guests: Dr Amanda Schapel
This event is for anyone with questions about soil carbon, especially farmers who baselined their carbon stocks through the FarmLab and FLINTpro baselining of KI’s soil carbon.
This will be a casual Q & A event, with some context about the Carbon Farming Outreach Program
Do you have questions about soil carbon? Come along to an afternoon with soil carbon guru Dr Amanda Schapel to ask all your soil questions and gain some context on how sequestering carbon can improve your soil and productivity.
Dr Amanda Schapel is a soil scientist who’s happiest when talking about what’s happening beneath your boots. With decades of experience working across South Australia, Amanda now leads the South Australian Soils Collaboration Centre at PIRSA. Her work focuses on soil health and carbon—developing practical benchmarks that help farmers understand which soils have the potential to build carbon and which ones need protecting. She’s all about making soil science useful, usable, and maybe even a little bit fun—because healthy soils mean healthy farms, and that’s something worth digging into.
Amanda will help interpret results from the FarmLab baseline reports and other soil testing results. Her expertise is not to be missed so bring along your data and your questions!

Deeper Dive into Carbon Calculators
Date: 2 October 2025
Time: 1pm to 3pm (includes free lunch)
Location: Stokes Bay Hall
Been to a Beginner’s Guide to Carbon Farming workshop? Ready to take the next step?
Join us for a workshop to dive a little deeper into the different calculators that can help land managers create a greenhouse gas account. Using your own data, we can help you complete your own carbon account. We’ll also look at what levers to pull to reduce emissions and improve productivity.
Can’t make it this time? We will run some more Carbon Calculator workshops later in the year, and early 2026. Express your interest now!
What to bring:
• 📒Collected farm data records
• 💻Laptop or other device if you have one
• ❓All your carbon and low emissions questions
Contact us to register your interest and get information on what data you need to collect to start a carbon account for your business.
This project is funded by the Commonwealth of Australia through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water under the Carbon Farming Outreach Program.
