Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Emergency Response Framework for Natural Assets
The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board (the Board) recognises there is a growing need to enhance our preparedness for natural disasters and their impact on natural assets. By investing in disaster preparedness, long-term costs for recovery and restoration post-disaster will be hopefully reduced.
To prepare for future events including bushfire, drought, flood (terrestrial and coastal), and pest and disease incursion, the Board has undertaken a first pass, high level assessment using staff and stakeholder knowledge, existing spatial data and a suite of mapping products to develop an Emergency Response Framework for Natural Assets. This framework identifies what the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board could do before, during and after emergency events, taking into consideration the Board’s legislated responsibilities, available resources, and current lack of defined role in the State’s emergency management governance arrangements.
The Board's Emergency Response Framework for Natural Assets includes sections on four emergency events – bushfire, drought, flooding, and pest and disease incursion. The emergency scenario chapters are intended to be accessed and used as a quick-reference guide in the event of an emergency. They contain information on the emergency scenarios, risks, vulnerabilities and opportunities of Kangaroo Island’s natural asset classes, risk mitigation actions the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board could take, a summary of available mapping and knowledge, key contacts and where to find more information.
Existing spatial knowledge of natural assets and hazard exposure has been developed into a suite of maps for centralised access and to improve understanding of what assets are most at risk.
