Board members recently got their hands dirty at the KI Native Plant Nursery during a field trip, repotting endangered native plants, moving potting mix and inspecting seed collections and seedlings.

Nursery staff member Sandra Leigh demonstrated seed collection and storage, along with potting techniques. Chair Aphid Heinrich also inspected native plants ordered for the new Ellson Hotel in Kingscote.

The Board’s Native Plant Nursery grows more than 100 species of Kangaroo Island native plants for home gardens, farm shelterbelts, coastal properties and revegetation projects.

The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Biodiversity Team Leader Dr Karleah Berris said planning ahead would help people select suitable plants and prepare their sites before planting next winter.

“If you’re planning to plant in 2027, get in touch now so we can discuss what you need and organise your order,” Dr Berris said.

“Tell us about your soil, the area you want to plant and what you want to achieve. That helps us recommend a suitable mix of local species.”
