Local voices wanted on Kangaroo Island Landscape Board

The Board is seeking people from across the island who can contribute different skills, perspectives, experience and local knowledge.

Board members provide strategic leadership and help guide regional priorities relating to sustainable agriculture, water, biodiversity, biosecurity, pest plants and animals, climate resilience and community stewardship.

Current Board member Barbara Cooper, an experienced teacher and partner in a farming enterprise and trucking business on western Kangaroo Island, said the 2020 bushfires motivated her to become involved.

“The bushfires were a turning point for me. They showed how important it is for us to come together as a community, support one another and look after the island we share,” Mrs Cooper said.

“I have always been deeply interested in agriculture, plants, animals and the sea. I wanted to contribute to protecting Kangaroo Island’s natural environment, supporting primary production and remaining vigilant and proactive about threats such as pest animals and other biosecurity risks.”

Mrs Cooper said one of the most rewarding aspects of serving on the Board had been working with and for the Kangaroo Island community.

“I have met people with different backgrounds and experiences and learned from their perspectives.

“I have lived at the western end of the island all my life, and serving on the Board has encouraged me to think about Kangaroo Island as a whole and better understand the issues and opportunities facing other parts of our community.

“Contributing to the work towards feral cat eradication has been particularly rewarding. It has also been inspiring to meet people who have dedicated their lives to understanding and protecting Kangaroo Island’s environment.”

Mrs Cooper encouraged people not to assume they lacked the right background or experience to nominate.

“If you have a passion for our land, sea, agriculture or natural environment, I would encourage you to put your hand up,” she said.

“You learn a great deal, meet new people and have an opportunity to contribute to issues that matter to you and your community.

“There is no single ‘right fit’. The Board needs people with different life experiences, knowledge and connections who are willing to listen, contribute and consider the bigger picture.”

Landscape Board members are appointed by the Minister for Climate, Environment and Water. Applications are encouraged from people across Kangaroo Island and from a range of professional, cultural and community backgrounds.

Women, First Nations people, young adults and people from culturally diverse backgrounds are particularly encouraged to nominate.

Nominations opened on Monday 13 July and close at 5 pm on Sunday 16 August 2026. Current Board members are also welcome to reapply.

Successful nominees will be appointed for terms of up to four years, commencing on 31 January 2027.
