Special weekend sale makes it easier to plant local
Kangaroo Island residents and landholders will have a rare weekend opportunity to visit the Kangaroo Island Native Plant Nursery at a special plant sale in August. The special sale is planned for 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday 15 August and Sunday 16 August where plants will be reduced to $2.00 per tube stock, $5 for larger pots.
Normally open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the nursery is opening on the weekend to make it easier for people who work or have other weekday commitments to purchase locally grown native plants during the winter planting season.
Located at 22b Telegraph Road, Kingscote, the nursery grows more than 100 species of Kangaroo Island native plants for home gardens, farms, coastal properties, revegetation projects, windbreaks and shelterbelts.
KI Native Plant Nursery Manager Jo McPhee said the weekend sale would give more community members an opportunity to explore the nursery and seek advice about their planting projects.
“We know our usual Tuesday and Thursday opening hours do not suit everyone, particularly people who work during the week or have other commitments,” Jo said.
“This special weekend sale is an opportunity to visit the nursery, see what is available and speak with our team about the plants best suited to your property and what you want to achieve.”
Plants grown from locally collected seed are adapted to Kangaroo Island’s soils, climate and environmental conditions, giving them a strong chance of establishing successfully.
“Choosing local native plants helps retain the distinctive character and diversity of Kangaroo Island’s vegetation,” Jo said.
“They also provide food and habitat for native birds, pollinators and other wildlife. You do not need a large revegetation project to make a difference—native plants can be incorporated into home gardens, coastal properties, paddocks and areas around sheds, fences and dams.”
On farms, well-designed shelterbelts can protect livestock, crops and pastures from strong winds while providing shade, stabilising soils and creating habitat for wildlife and beneficial insects.
A range of locally grown trees, shrubs and groundcovers will be available during the sale. The nursery team can advise residents and landholders about species suited to their soil, location and planting goals. Tree guards and stakes are also available.
Outside the special weekend sale, the nursery is open from May to August on Tuesdays from 9 am to 1 pm and Thursdays from 9 am to 4.30 pm.
