Have your say on our new plan
Submissions close 15 March
The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board (the Board) is updating our five-year Landscape Plan and we want your input.
The Plan sets a shared direction for how the Board will support community, biodiversity, land and water, and manage pests and climate risks, for the next five years.
Over the past year community members, First Nations people, school students, land managers and partner organisations have shared their knowledge, concerns and aspirations through more than 450 interactions including workshops, surveys, written feedback and activities at the Kingscote and Parndana Shows. This has been combined with scientific evidence, monitoring data and existing strategies to develop the new Plan.
This Plan will guide the Board’s work from 2026 to 2031, identifying regional priorities, focus areas and outcomes to coordinate action and attract funding.
We are now in the formal, statutory six-week consultation period, which is the final step before the Plan is considered by the Board and submitted to the Minister for approval.

Submissions close 15 March 2026.
What you can expect from the process
- You’ll be heard. We’ll listen and reflect back what we’re hearing.
- We’ll be clear about what’s in scope, and what happens next.
- Engagement will respect your views and your time, and be focused on practical action.
All submissions will be reviewed by the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board. The Board will then consider whether any changes are needed before approving the final Plan and submitting it to the Minister for Climate, Environment and Water.
Submissions help inform the Board’s final decision-making. A summary of feedback received will be prepared as part of the Plan finalisation process.
Following the public consultation, the final Plan will be presented to the Minister for Environment for adoption.
Why your voice matters
- The more the Plan reflects real issues and opportunities on KI, the more useful and powerful it will be.
- We’re looking for a broad mix of views, from farmers and fishers to conservation groups, tourism businesses and young people.
- Whether you’ve got a big vision or a small idea, it can help shape the future direction of our landscape.
Key milestones for developing the Plan: how you can have your say about the future work of the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board
What is the Kangaroo Island Landscape Plan?
The Kangaroo Island Landscape Plan sets a shared direction for how we support community, biodiversity, land and water, and manage pests and climate risks, for the next five years. It guides priorities, investment and partnerships across the Island.
Why we’re doing this
- The Kangaroo Island Landscape Plan (the Plan) sets our priorities for how we care for land, water, biodiversity, and sustainable livelihoods on Kangaroo Island.
- Healthy landscapes support agriculture, fishing, tourism, biodiversity, and community wellbeing.
- We want a Plan that reflects the aspirations, knowledge and lived experiences of the people who live, work and care for this place.
- This is about setting a shared direction, so that effort and investment are focused where they matter most.
What the Plan will do
- The Plan will guide KILB’s work over the next five years (2026-2031), coordinating action and attracting funding.
- It will build on our achievements and learning from last five years.
- It will identify regional priorities, focus areas and outcomes for the Board to achieve in managing landscapes and supporting resilient communities.
- The Plan will be practical – helping to turn community insights, science and regional knowledge into real outcomes.
What the Plan won’t do
- It’s not a regulatory tool and it won’t override other planning processes.
- It’s not a commitment to fund or deliver everything immediately, but it will make a stronger case for investment.
- It won’t revisit decisions made through other processes but it will ensure that local voices shape future priorities.
Why is the Plan open for consultation now?
The Plan is now in its final draft form and is open for a statutory six-week public consultation period, as required under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019. This is the final opportunity for public comment before the Plan is approved by the Board and submitted to the Minister.
Has the community already been involved?
Yes. This Plan has been shaped by the people of Kangaroo Island, with more than 450 community interactions to date. Community members, land managers, young people and partner organisations contributed through workshops, surveys, written feedback and engagement at local Shows.
What you told us – your observations, concerns and lived experience – has been combined with scientific evidence, monitoring data and existing strategies.
If consultation has already happened, why comment now?
Earlier engagement helped shape the draft Plan.
This formal consultation period allows the community to:
- review the full, final draft
- check it reflects what you told us
- raise any remaining issues before the Plan is finalised.
What sort of feedback are you looking for?
We welcome feedback on:
- whether the priorities and focus areas feel right for Kangaroo Island
- whether the Plan clearly reflects local values and challenges
- anything you think is missing, unclear or could be improved.
You don’t need to comment on the whole Plan – feedback on a single issue is welcome.
What can change at this stage?
This consultation is on the final draft of the Landscape Plan. Feedback received during this period will help the Board decide whether refinements are needed before the Plan is approved and submitted to the Minister.
At this stage:
- The overall vision, focus areas and direction of the Plan are unlikely to change significantly, as they are based on extensive earlier engagement.
- Feedback can help clarify wording, strengthen priorities, address gaps, or improve how actions are explained.
- Where strong or consistent themes emerge, the Board may make targeted changes to ensure the Plan better reflects community values and intent.
This consultation ensures the final Plan is clear, robust and ready for implementation.
What happens after the consultation closes?
All submissions will be reviewed by the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board. The Board will then consider whether any changes are needed before approving the final Plan and submitting it to the Minister for Climate, Environment and Water.
How will my submission be used?
Submissions help inform the Board’s final decision-making. A summary of feedback received will be prepared as part of the Plan finalisation process.
How do I make a submission?
You can:
- read the final draft Landscape Plan
- click here to complete the survey
- email a written submission to ki.landscapeboard@sa.gov.au
- or comment on specific parts of the plan in the survey or by email.
Do I have to make a formal submission?
No. Submissions can be as short or detailed as you like. A few sentences sharing your perspective is perfectly acceptable.
