KI NRM Board seeks federal funding
The Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board and staff at Natural Resources Kangaroo Island are preparing a tender submission for Australian Government funding under the recently announced Regional Land Partnerships Program. This program is part of the second phase of the National Landcare Program that will commence in July this year, running through to June 2023.
KI NRM Board presiding member Richard Trethewey said the board had applied for funding under the Smart Farms Program in December and is now working hard to meet the 28 February deadline for the Regional Land Partnerships program tender submission.
“Australian Government funding is crucial to the work of the board, constituting 40 per cent of the board’s budget in 2017-18 to deliver projects relating to sustainable production, key pest control, biosecurity, on-ground works, and threatened species recovery,” Mr Trethewey said.
“The board has identified a number of priorities in the newly adopted Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Plan 2017-2027 that are congruent with the specific outcomes and priorities that the Australian Government are seeking to address.
“These include the reversal in the decline of certain threatened species and plant communities, increased awareness of land management practices that protect natural resources, and assisting the agricultural sector to adapt to changing climate and market demands.”
Mr Trethewey said that in delivering the work, the Board will continue to engage and collaborate with community members and organisations, as well as other key stakeholders. The proposed projects would seek to continue building the skills and capacity of the KI community to manage the Island’s natural resources in the best possible way.
The Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources will continue to support the work of the board, through the provision of policy, administrative, information technology and scientific support.
