Wallaby grass (Rytidosperma sp) was one of the key species planted, which attracts the Common Brown and Klug’s Xenica butterflies. Other flowering species, such as Acacia (wattle) and Kennedia prostrata (Running postman), were also planted in the gardens to increase the chances of attracting the native butterflies.

The students enjoyed learning about the importance of planting local natives to provide habitat and as essential food sources for our local insects.

The planting day at Parndana Campus was developed through the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board working closely with KICE to provide engaging environmental opportunities for Kangaroo Island students.

Andrew Heinrich, Chair of the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board, said environmental education helps children develop a deeper connection with nature. This leads to greater appreciation for the environment and a strong sense of stewardship.

"As a primary producer and land manager, I have planted thousands of trees on our property over the years," Mr Heinrich said.

"It has been incredibly rewarding to watch them grow, attract native species and provide environmental benefits to our farm," he said,

"Seeing young children learn about the environment and how to support biodiversity gives me hope that future generations will be prepared to face environmental challenges and work towards a more sustainable future."

The Kangaroo Island Native Plant Nursery is a service delivered by the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board, supported by funding from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife, the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network and the Landscape Priority Fund.
