Upcoming KI workshop: understanding stock behaviour and reducing farmer stress

Register now for the Kangaroo Island’s workshop on bettering the interaction between people and animals to improve overall farming efficiency.

The workshop – low stress stock handling – will be held on Kangaroo Island later this year by Nic Kentish a grazier and low stress stock trainer with over 10 years’ experience running such workshops.

The workshop is about fostering a less stressful interaction between people and animals through reduced stock handling, also leading to improved economic outcomes.

Mr Kentish said that you will learn how to change a 10 per cent weight loss in the first month after weaning to a 5 per cent gain, and how to slow paddock stock movement for a decrease in hay and grain supplement use.

“The workshop will also help you to reduce your own stress while handling stock.

“Days spent in the stockyards are often stressful, creating a strained working environment for family businesses and colleagues alike.

“You will see working conditions improve and experience increased income from less stressed and more productive animals.

“By the end of the course you will be able to identify the natural instincts of the stock and work with them, rather than forcing them.”

Mr Kentish said that efficient stock movement provides the stock with time to sort out their hierarchy at mustering and to mother-up at marking.

Workshop fees are $880 per person with a 25 per cent discount for a second person from the family or business, while under 16 year olds can join for half price.

Mr Kentish offers a no questions asked, money back guarantee if you are not satisfied.

The workshop is supported by Natural Resources Kangaroo Island (NRKI) through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme. For more information or to register your interest contact Grant Flanagan 8553 4440 or email
