Eighth International Island Arks Symposium kicks off on Kangaroo Island
The Eighth Island Arks Symposium kicked off at the Aurora Ozone Hotel on Monday night, August 26, and was set to continue through the week.
More than 90 people attended the official opening night, marked by an acknowledgment of Country by Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna, and Narungga man Bill Wilson.
Welcoming delegates to Kangaroo Island were Green Adelaide chairman, Professor Chris Daniels, Kangaroo Island Landscape Board chairman Andrew Heinrich and general manager Will Durack, as well as Dorian Moro from the Island Arks national organising committee.
More than 130 people from across the Pacific region attended the four-day conference, a testament to the global interest in island conservation.
Their shared knowledge and skills about conservation and land management in island environments not only made this a truly significant event but also underscored the vital role each individual plays in this collective effort.
“It has been truly fantastic to see so many people share their learnings and experiences across a diverse range of projects and initiatives on island environments,” Mr Heinrich said, inspiring us with the breadth and depth of our collective work.
“The Landscape Board is proud to support the Island Arks Symposium and its continued commitment to protect and preserve unique environments across Australia and the Asia Pacific region.”
The symposium’s presentations covered topics such as feral animal eradication, threatened species management, Indigenous land management, and community-led projects.
“I would like to thank our staff and the national committee for their efforts to bring so many people who are passionate advocates for sustainable conservation,” he said.
