Free property management plans available
The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board (KILB) is inviting expressions of interest from Kangaroo Island farmers and property owners to join a new two-year Property Management Planning (PMP) program – a unique opportunity to access free, personalised support to develop a whole-of-property plan for long-term success.
Running from late 2025 through to June 2027, this fully subsidised program supports participants to work alongside agricultural specialists of their choice and gain access to field days, expert workshops, and tailored one-on-one support.
KILB Chair,Andrew Heinrich said property management planning is important for farmers because it provides a roadmap for managing their land and business to increase profitability, ensure long-term sustainability, and prepare for unexpected events.
“These plans help farmers align day-to-day operations with strategic goals, making the business more resilient to challenges like market shifts and climate events such as drought,” Mr Heinrich said.
“Property Management Planning offers landholders a rare chance to take a step back from the day-to-day and assess their whole farming operation,” he said.
Over the course of eight workshops, on-farm support sessions, and technical events, participants will:
- Create a tailored plan for their property, business goals, and land capability
- Identify key productivity and sustainability priorities
- Access targeted expertise in soil health, grazing management, water security, business planning, and more
- Strengthen succession planning, infrastructure investment and natural resource management
- Be better positioned to access future grant funding
KILB Agriculture Extension Officer and PMP Coordinator Cassandra Douglas-Hill said one of the key benefits of participating is that formalised property management plans can support landholders to secure funding for on-ground projects that align with their PMP recommendations.
“This could include initiatives such as improving groundcover, enhancing soil health, reducing pest populations, or increasing water security,” Ms Douglas-Hill said.
In addition, over the next two years, the KILB will be bringing nationally recognised agricultural experts to the island to lead field days and workshops.
“These events will cover a wide range of topics critical to modern farming, including pasture management, nutrient planning, climate resilience, and sustainable production systems,” Ms Douglas-Hill said.
“PMP participants will have free access to these events, and the rare opportunity to work one-on-one with experts to discuss their individual property goals and challenges,” she said.
“This is not just another workshop series, “said Ms Douglas-Hill, “It’s a structured opportunity to map out what you want for your land and business and get the support and tools to make it happen.”
The PMP program is grounded in whole-of-farm thinking and draws on both local knowledge and technical expertise. Participants will also benefit from peer-to-peer learning and support throughout the program.
Past PMP participants are encouraged to re-join, while new applicants are warmly welcomed. The program is open to all Kangaroo Island landholders and primary producers who want to strengthen their farm business and build resilience in the face of changing seasons and markets.
