Soil health workshop puts productivity under the microscope
Kangaroo Island primary producers are being invited to register their interest in future soil health workshops after a recent Kangaroo Island Landscape Board session with David Hardwick from Soil Land Food was strongly supported by local participants.
The workshop, facilitated by Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Property Management Coordinator Cassandra Douglas-Hill, focused on practical ways landholders can better understand soil carbon, organic matter, nutrient cycling, soil testing and landscape rehydration.
The session helped producers look more closely at how healthier soils can support productivity, improve water use, reduce input losses and guide better property management decisions.
Participant David Westbrook said the workshop had changed the way he looked at soil health.
“Working with David Hardwick has completely changed the way I look at soil health,” Mr Westbrook said.
“He helped me understand not only why healthy soil is so important, but also how to properly test it and interpret the results in a practical way.
“David’s knowledge, clear communication and down-to-earth approach made it easy to identify the best actions to improve productivity and long-term sustainability.
“I’d highly recommend him to anyone wanting to better understand and improve their soils.”
Participant Nicole Harris said Mr Hardwick’s broad industry knowledge and practical approach made the information accessible.
“He was very knowledgeable and explained things at the right level for the participants,” Ms Harris said.
“A lot of what he talked about showed that soil health does not have to be rocket science. Some basic things can work, and it is not just about putting soil tests in the cupboard — it is about understanding what those results actually mean.
“I feel more confident now, and not so silly about asking more questions about my soil.
“David was able to cut through the noise and explain what was actually applicable.”
Ms Douglas-Hill said the Board would welcome the opportunity to bring Mr Hardwick back to Kangaroo Island, depending on interest from local primary producers.
“The feedback from participants was very positive,” Ms Douglas-Hill said.
“David was approachable, engaging and practical. He made complex soil health information easier to understand and apply on farm.
“We are now seeking expressions of interest from primary producers who would like to take part in future free workshops and access resources to help boost productivity and reduce costs.”
Primary producers interested in future soil health workshops with David Hardwick are encouraged to contact Cassandra Douglas-Hill, Property Management Coordinator, at the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board.
