Carbon in the pastoral zone

News article |

Fifty-five participants in the SA Arid Lands have been supported to learn more about carbon management as it applies to the pastoral zone through training from the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board.

Carbon in the pastoral zone

The board’s Carbon Outreach Officer Jade Leyden delivered a carbon pilot in October to three landholders and 12 extension officers who provided feedback on the training module and allowed it to be further developed for delivery to regional audiences.

Land managers at the Improving Traceability Day at Bindarrah in early November were introduced to carbon farming and why it is relevant to the region based on international policy and supply chain expectations.

Two workshops in the Flinders Ranges in November delivered the full training module over five hours. The workshops at Quorn and Cradock delivered more in-depth details about international policy, carbon accounting, reducing livestock emissions and carbon as it applies to the rangelands.

Land managers were introduced to the session through an explanation of greenhouse gases and helped to understand the drivers in place when discussing carbon.

The key agreements in place in response to the enhanced greenhouse gas effect were also outlined. They help explain why the supply chain, markets and governments are moving towards a net zero economy.

The contribution of agriculture to Australia’s emissions were discussed, with the industry approximately accounting for 17 per cent of the nation’s emissions. Possible ways to reduce livestock emissions were considered.

Information was also shared about the major programs affecting the carbon market that businesses may think about entering. These included carbon credits, carbon neutrality and carbon accounting.

If you want to know more about carbon as it relates to the pastoral zone, workshops will be delivered across the region in 2025. Keep an eye on the board’s social media and website and your email to find out more as dates become available.

The Carbon Farming Outreach Program is funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water.
