Funds to upgrade wells and water networks
Landholders who rely on the Great Artesian Basin for their water supply are encouraged to express interest in a co-funding program aimed at improving water security across the region.
Funding is being offered in the 2026/27 financial year for the rehabilitation, maintenance and replacement of wells and associated distribution networks under the Commonwealth's Great Artesian Basin Water Security Program (GABWSP). With just one year left on the program now is the time to act to receive funding support.
As in past year, the program operates on a cost-sharing basis, covering up to 50 per cent of eligible water supply infrastructure projects. Eligible works include the replacement of aging wells, decommissioning of wells, installation of water-tight distribution infrastructure to replace open flows, and the replacement of aging water distribution networks.
South Australia was allocated $5 million for the four years until June 2028. These funds are administered by the Department for Environment and Water in partnership with the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board.
Lodging an expression of interest is the first step to accessing funds that could cover up to half the cost of upgrading or replacing water infrastructure. With aging wells and distribution systems posing a growing risk to reliable water supply, this program offers a valuable opportunity to improve critical infrastructure without bearing the full financial burden.
