Doctors Beach Streaky Bay

Doctors Beach Streaky Bay

At this Pix Stix we are monitoring change to the saltmarsh ecosystem at the western end of Doctor’s Beach which contains mangroves, tidal creeks, sandflats and intertidal seagrass.

This saltmarsh ecosystem provides an important link between the land and sea, filtering runoff and cleaning the water before it reaches the marine environment.

The saltmarsh areas is also an important nursery for many species including blue swimmer crabs and whiting, as well as foraging habitat for internationally important shorebird species.

Coastal saltmarshes are under threat from sea level rise which is causing mangroves to migrate and squeeze out the saltmarsh.

Look out for a Pix Stix icon when on location to submit your photos.
