Waterbug Bioblitz census Clare & Barossa: Locals invited to count bugs (instead of people)

The Northern and Yorke Landscape Board is inviting community members to swap household forms for gumboots and nets at this year's Waterbug Bioblitz events in Clare and the Barossa.

A bioblitz is essentially a census for nature, a one-day effort to record as many living things as possible in a specific location. Instead of counting people, participants will work alongside aquatic ecologists to tally waterbugs, measure water quality and help uncover the health of local waterways.

No experience is needed, just bring your curiosity, sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure.

“Ever wondered what tiny creatures are living beneath the surface of your local creek or river? Or perhaps you're looking for an excuse to spend a day outdoors while helping scientists? These upcoming Waterbug Bioblitz events in Clare and the Barossa in September are for you,” says Elisha Brunton, Community Engagement Officer Northern and Yorke Landscape Board.

“Part citizen science, part outdoor adventure, and all about local waterways, Waterbug Bioblitz brings together community members, nature lovers and aquatic ecologists for a hands-on day of discovery.

“Come along and collect and identify waterbugs (macroinvertebrates), test water quality, and contribute valuable information that helps build a clearer picture of catchment health across the region,” Ms Brunton says.

Plus, it sounds like a fun day out – and a chance to get to know other nature lovers in the region.

You'll learn from experts on how to collect waterbug samples from pools and watercourses, plus measure water quality along our local waterways.

Interested in joining the bug hunt?

The annual events are open for registrations now and focus on waterways across the Clare Valley and Barossa Valley catchments. They provide important environmental data while connecting local communities with the landscapes they help care for.
