Climate
Changes to our climate are happening at an increased pace and having a growing impact on our lives and livelihoods. In coming decades, it’s projected that Australia will experience:
- hotter extremes
- more dangerous fire weather days
- short, intense rainfall events
- sea level rise
The Northern and Yorke Landscape Board is committed to working with our community to respond to these challenges through protecting and restoring natural systems, building capacity in adaptive agriculture and increasing regional resilience with best practice landscape management.
Emissions reduction
Setting targets to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere is helping governments and industries, like agriculture, become laser-focused about reducing the impacts of a changing climate.
Since the 2022 Paris Agreement update, the Australian Government has committed to reducing emissions to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030. The South Australian Government’s target is 50% below 2005 levels by 2030.
Plans are also in place to help everyone work together. Here are plans that directly impact the Northern and Yorke region.
Biodiversity
A changing climate impacts our region’s biodiversity. The National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy - DCCEEW, aims to position Australia to better anticipate, manage and adapt to our changing climate.
Our projects
The Board is currently working with landholders and stakeholders on projects that deliver climate-related outcomes:
- The Carbon Farming Outreach Program offers workshops to help land managers increase their knowledge of carbon farming and emissions reduction.
- The Biodiversity + Carbon project addresses property planning and revegetation to enhance biodiversity while preparing for the opportunities offered by the carbon market.
- The Growing Carbon Farming Demonstration Pilot project, led by Upper North Farming Systems, is assessing the viability of the Integrated Farm Management method and alternative revenue pathways and co-benefits from management change that sequesters carbon in soil and vegetation.
