Waterbug Bioblitz
If you’re interested in waterbugs, citizen science, or just curious about the health of local waterways then our Waterbug Bioblitz events are for you.
A bioblitz, also referred to as a biological inventory or census, is a one-day event that aims to provide a comprehensive tally of the diverse array of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms inhabiting a specific location.
Two Waterbug Bioblitz events are held each year in the Northern and Yorke region. Community groups and organisations, individuals and staff join forces with aquatic ecologists to collect as much information as possible about the macroinvertebrates (waterbugs) and water quality of a catchment.
You'll learn from experts on how to collect waterbug samples from pools and watercourses plus measure water quality along our local waterways.
The Waterbug Bioblitz program links closely with our Waterwatch program and other citizen science programs to help create a fuller picture of the trends and health indicators of our waterways.
Join us this year!
A one-day citizen science event where community members, scientists, and nature lovers team up to explore and monitor the health of local waterways. Working alongside aquatic ecologists, participants will collect and identify waterbugs (macroinvertebrates) and test water quality, contributing valuable data to support long-term monitoring, education, and conservation efforts. Part of the Waterbug Bioblitz program, this hands-on event requires no experience—training and equipment are provided. Just bring your curiosity and a sense of adventure!
