Ngadjuri cultural camp builds connection, healing and hope

The Ngadjuri community gathered on Country in July not just to camp, but to reconnect. The Ngadjuri Cultural On-Country Camp, held over two meaningful days, was about coming home to culture, to land, and to each other.

For some, it was the first time walking on their ancestral Country. For others, it was a chance to share knowledge with children and grandchildren. Together, they took in the beauty and deep significance of places like Worlds End Gorge, Burra Creek and tucked-away places in the Clare Valley.

Shared meals and campfires created space to yarn, laugh and reflect – not just about the past, but about where the community is headed. A traditional cook-up at Paulett Wines featured a bush foods menu created and prepared through a collaboration between Ngadjuri people and Paulett’s staff. Ali Paulett also shared her vision of involving Ngadjuri people in their native bush garden and providing a space on Country for them to return to.

From the warm hospitality of Paulett Wines, the group then enjoyed story-sharing with Watervale Hotel and Penobscot Farm Owners Nicola Palmer and Warrick Duthy. The couple revealed how they’re incorporating First Nations knowledge into their business decision-making and land restoration.

The weekend created a sense of cultural connection and healing. As one participant said, “Really enjoyed the experience as a family gathering and going to see significant and meaningful sites.” Another shared: “...was great to have this opportunity to pass on my knowledge to the new ones, my children and grandchildren.”

Dubbed The Gathering, the Ngadjuri Cultural On-Country Camp was funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
