Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Parkis the place to be in January

Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Parkwill be a hive of activity throughout the month of January, as it is celebrated as Park of the Month – an initiative encouraging children and families to get into South Australia’s outdoors.

Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National ParkRanger in Charge Mark Davison said a number of fun ranger guided and self-guided activities would provide children and families with an opportunity to explore the environment and discover why it’s so important to protect it.

“Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Parkis home to kangaroos, Tammar wallabies, emus, Mallee fowl, pygmy possums, hooded plovers and a whole host of weird and wonderful marine species that live within the waters of the Southern Spencer Gulf Marine Park,” Mr Davison said.

“We have developed a special program of activities that showcase these creatures to coincide with Park of the Month, the school holidays and Christmas and New Year break.

“Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Parkrangers and subject experts will lead a variety of exciting activities for the community to participate in.

“Visitors can join a twilight walk on Friday 4 and Saturday 12 January through the historic Inneston township to hear the fascinating story of the Tammar wallaby and see them come out to graze after the sun goes down.

“Children’s author and illustrator Paul Rutter will teach participants how to draw local shipwrecks from around the coast of Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Parkand Southern Spencer Gulf Marine Park on Saturday 5 January.

“On Monday 7 and Monday 21 January, join our Rangers for an informative talk and learn about the importance of Marine Parks and protecting these reefs, then travel to Pondalowie Bay for a reef ramble.

“Visitors can explore the intertidal reef zone at low tide and discover the vast array of creatures and plants that call these important ecosystems home.

“BirdLife Australia will lead a beach walk on Friday 11 January focussing on Australia’s most threatened beach-nesting bird, the Hooded Plover, the efforts to improve breeding success and their quirky breeding behaviours.”
