Turtle Nest Survey - Wongulla

Event
10 February 2026 until 10 February 2026

It’s Turtle Nesting Season!

Freshwater turtles are nesting, and this is a crucial time for their conservation, especially in the Murray-Darling system in South Australia, where their numbers are sadly declining. To make a difference, we need your help in gathering information about their nesting sites. By identifying nesting hotspots, we can implement effective conservation measures to ensure more young turtles thrive in our waterways.

Turtle Nest Survey - Wongulla

Program for the day:

  • Meet us at 649 Cliff View Dr, Wongulla on Tuesday 10 February 2026 - 9:30 am
  • Welcome and introduction (1 Million Turtles, TurtleSAT, Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board) – 9:30 am – 10 am
  • Nest surveying – 10 am – 11:30 am
  • Refreshments and further turtle talk - 11:30 am - 12 pm
  • Optional BBQ lunch - 12 pm - 1 pm

Hosted by Walker Flat and Districts Progress Association and Mid Murray Landcare SA

We are starting early in case the day is forecast to be hot.

The survey will involve relatively easy walking for up to 2 hours near the edge of the water looking for evidence of turtle nests that have been dug up by foxes. When we find the nests we will record the location using the TurtleSAT app.

Please note: if the fire weather forecast reaches Extreme or Catastrophic levels, we will need to cancel and reschedule the survey for a later date. We’ll confirm any cancellations via email after 5 PM the day before the event, based on the latest weather updates.

Let’s work together to protect our turtles!
