Carbon Essentials for Agribusiness

The Carbon Essentials for Agriculture workshop series focuses on the key drivers of change in agriculture and the specific adaptations required for horticultural growers and processors.

The series is designed as the starting point for attendees to understand the value of developing a carbon footprint and the best strategies for doing so, using relevant industry resources and approaches.

For grain growers and mixed farming enterprises, Mallee Sustainable Farming is hosting a parallel series of workshops, and they can be contacted for more details.

Following the initial workshops, further targeted sessions will likely be developed to delve deeper into carbon footprint calculation, emissions reduction practices, and carbon sequestration opportunities, with guidance from industry groups and leading researchers.

Microbial management and regenerative agriculture in soil (YouTube)
What is the role of regenerative agriculture in low rainfall cropping systems? Dr Mark Farrell from CSIRO provides some insight into this question, and provides and overview of the current research into this field. This presentation was given during our 2022 AgForum which focused on the potential of carbon farming for low rainfall agriculture zones.

Preventing pests and prickles (YouTube)
District Officer Russell Norman speaks about current weed issues in the Mallee including opuntia (prickly pears) which have been successfully controlled with biocontrol agents, boxthorn and feathertop rhodes grass. Russell also spoke about the spray trailers available for hire through the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, fox bait distribution days and the impact of rabbits on productive land.

Panel discussion (YouTube)
Mark Farrell, Amanda Schapel and Eliza Reiger answered questions from the audience at our 2022 AgForum on carbon farming. Find out why soil organic matter rates are declining in cropping systems and why grazing stubbles can undo the benefits of year-round soil cover.
