Regent parrot project

The regent parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus) is a vibrant bird found only in Australia, with 2 separate populations: one in Western Australia (Polytelis anthopeplus anthopeplus)and the other eastern subspecies (Polytelis anthopeplus monarchoides) found across parts of south-eastern New South Wales, north-west Victoria and the Murray Mallee and Riverland region in South Australia.

Known for its bright yellow plumage, green wings and distinctive red beak this visually impressive parrot is considered endangered in New South Wales and vulnerable in both Victoria and South Australia.

Regent parrot project

A range of initiatives are underway to support the recovery and long-term survival of the regent parrot, including:

  • Conducting habitat surveys and ongoing population monitoring to guide conservation strategies.
  • Partnering with local landholders to protect, manage, and restore vital nesting and feeding habitats.
  • Working together with dedicated volunteers, community groups, universities, zoos, businesses and local horticultural industry towards the conservation of regent parrots.
